# Open Patterns
Last updated: 2026-05-07
**Open Patterns** is a living body of [[Pattern definition|patterns]] for how we think, feel, and act as individuals and groups. It exists to name these patterns, make them legible, and share them in forms that others can use, adapt, refine, and build on.
Open means that patterns are made visible rather than kept implicit, shared rather than hoarded, and treated as things that can be examined, improved, and built on by others.
Some of these patterns are ancient. Some are newly named. Most are easier to use once they can be seen.
## Pattern Families
### Gathering Patterns
The structures of coordination. How people **convene, collaborate, and act together** in soft systems. Emerges from asking **"How do people come together to do something?"**
### Kit Patterns
The packaging of capability. How capacity is **assembled, bundled, and made ready for use**. Emerges from asking **"How is this capability packaged so it can be picked up and used?"**
### System Patterns
The dynamics of interdependence. How systems are **structured, behave, and evolve**. Emerges from asking **"What recurring dynamics shape this system?"**
### Leverage Patterns
The points of intervention. How change is **created through targeted action in a system**. Emerges from asking **"Where can action create disproportionate effect?"**
### Semantic Patterns
The shapes of meaning. How knowledge is **structured**. Emerges from asking "How is this knowledge organized?"
### Transmission Patterns
The movement of meaning. How knowledge is **carried, expressed, and delivered**. Emerges from asking "How is this knowledge conveyed?"
### Expression Patterns
The forming of meaning. How meaning is **made, externalized, and given perceivable form**. Emerges from asking **"How does meaning take form?"**
## Evolution
I try to name and share patterns early, refine through use, revise as their logic becomes clearer, and link into a growing body of work.
This isn't doctrine. It's a library of reusable structures that becomes sharper, more legible, and more useful over time.
